How Much (if Any) Should You Tip Your Chauffeur?

The word “tip” is an unofficial acronym that stands for “to ensure proper service.” It was originally designed to be paid before the service was provided, not after. In some countries, including Canada and the U.S., it has evolved to become a kind of bonus payment for good service already rendered.

Tipping in Canada is optional and yet widely expected. There are also unwritten rules about the correct percentage to tip in any given circumstance. If one falls short of this expectation, of course there are no material ramifications; however, if one were to encounter the same individual service provider, it’s likely that the service the second time around would be less enjoyable.

Taxi driver tipping is a different category than chauffeur tipping.

When availing of the services of a limousine or chauffeur, different rules apply in correlation with varying ways the encounter can take place.

Generally speaking, it’s customary to tip a chauffeur anywhere between 10 to 20% of the entire bill, including tax. When trying to gauge what is the correct percentage in this range to tip, consider the following:

1. Did your chauffeur make you and your guest(s) feel special?

Did they hold the door for you and use appropriate greetings and titles, such as “Mr.” or “ma’am”? Though such niceties are expected, it’s not impossible to encounter a driver who is lax on his/her manners and fails to live up to standards.

2. Was your ride a short excursion?

Have a Special Event? Why Not Get a Stretch Limo?

The tuxedo. The ball gown. The black tie. Of all the symbols of luxury, elegance, and class, there is simply nothing in this world that exudes sophistication and style like arriving in a stretch limo. Whether it’s the prom, a wedding, a funeral, or just a night out on the town, there is no better way to make a statement than to pull up in a chauffeured limousine.

How to Rent

After finding a few limo companies in your area, talk with them personally or on the phone. Get a specific list of both what is and is not included in the hourly rate. Make sure to find out if there is an extra mileage charge. Also, ask if your time starts when you’re picked up or when the car leaves the limo’s headquarters. Is there an additional fee for beverages and ice? Make sure there is a guarantee on the exact car you ordered, including color, make, and model.

Not only will you be much more likely to avoid game-day headaches, but you’ll be less likely to be surprised with a stretch bill to match your limo. Talking to them in person is also a great way to make sure they care about your big day as much as you.

Due Diligence

Make sure you’re dealing with a legitimate business. Hucksters always pop up during the busy seasons of weddings and dances. Ask for references and make sure you see copies of their licenses and insurance. Anyone can put up a very professional-looking website. Don’t get scammed, or worse, put yourself in an unlicensed car.

Plan in Advance

Limo companies work in seasons. There are event seasons in which car companies have their entire fleet booked every night for a month and have to turn down business, and then in the off-season, they service their fleets, catch up on operations, and schedule for the next busy season. Plan at least three months in advance.

Size

Leave extra room. Twelve people won’t fit comfortably in a 12-seat limo. The average limo is designed on the presumption that each “person” weighs 150 pounds. While many women weigh less than that, the vast majority of men will weigh decidedly more. Budget up on space needed.

Avoid headaches and problems by asking the right questions before you rent.

Limos are, in a word, awesome. They exude class, are elegant, and signify a range of concepts from a dignified carriage to a wild party. When you’re driving on the highway and you see a man in a tux and a woman in a dress with their heads out of the sunroof of a stretch limo, part of you wishes you were inside with them. So get inside of your own the next time you have an event worthy of the expense.
